Food For Youth Task Force
In 2016 the Public Good Society surveyed local teachers about hunger in the classroom. Over 90% of respondents said that hunger was an obstacle to learning for their students. The survey results were presented to open a public conversation about the topic at the local Coomunity Food Centre, with almost 100 people attending. The subsequent report that was produced and distributed helped inspire the Food For Youth Task Force, which began in 2017.
Facilitated and organized by Dartmouth North Librarian Carla Foxe, the Food For Youth Task Force is a collective of representatives from non-profit agencies, schools, and residents, supported by a variety of funders including the Public Good Society. Together, they have the mission to improve food security for youth living in Dartmouth North.
To date their work has involved breakfast programs, grab’n’go snacks, hot lunches, an in-school kitchen, a community garden and full-size greenhouse, cooking classes, food literacy, and more!
