Board Treasurer Job Description

As an officer of the Board of Directors, a volunteer Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the organization’s finances, and in partnership with the full Board of Directors, safeguarding the financial health of the organization.  The Treasurer monitors the nonprofits’ operational finances and regularly keeps the Board of Directors involved and apprised of financial information so collectively they can make decisions that support the mission, vision and reputation of the organization.  

Financial oversight can include activities as outlined below: 

  1. Financial Management: Managing the organization’s finances, including working with the Executive Committee in coordinating the budget process and making sure that the organization operates within its budgetary constraints.

  2. Signing Officers: Ensuring the documentation of the organizations’ signing officers is up to date, and on file after each AGM or in the event a signing officer leaves the Board of Directors. And that the organization is operating within the signing officer policies.  

  3. Banking: Managing the organization’s bank account. Ensures the Chair/Vice Chair of the Board is aware of where and how to access bank information.

  4. Financial Statements: Reviewing monthly financial statements with the bookkeeper, including the organization’s income and expenses, assets and liabilities, and other financial performance indicators.

  5. Reporting to the Board of Directors: Providing and presenting financial statements to the Board of Directors and answering any questions from the Board. 

  6. Internal Controls: Establishing proper internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets. E.g. bank reconciliation, expense review processes, financial document storage management. 

  7. Legislative Compliance: Ensuring that the nonprofit is compliant with all relevant financial and accounting regulations, as well as legal requirements or reporting obligations specific to charitable organizations. E.g. CRA, Payroll

  8. Grant Management: Ensuring that all fundraising and grant management is done in compliance to CRA and funder requirements.

  9. Auditing and Review: Working with external auditors to ensure the accuracy and transparency of the organization’s financial statements. Presenting the annual audited statement at the AGM. 

PGSD employs a professional Bookkeeper. This professional assumes many of the day-to-day roles and responsibilities allowing the Treasurer to take a more strategic and monitoring role.

Eligible nominees for election on the Board of Directors must:

  • Be a resident of Nova Scotia

  • Be 19 years of age or older

  • Be able and willing to fulfill the duties and responsibilities outlined in the description for a term of two years
